How to Respond When a Customer Says “It Is Too Expensive”

“Too expensive” is not an automatic discount request. First understand what the customer is comparing and what they are worried about before deciding whether to explain value, share proof or adjust the plan.

✓ Find the real concern before discussing a discount✓ Share proof that matches the concern✓ Keep price and commitment decisions with people

Sales conversations

Find out what “expensive” means

Ask naturally: “Are you mainly comparing budget, or is the value still unclear?” This invites the real concern instead of forcing a defensive price conversation.

Do not answer with a long list of features

If the customer worries about outcomes, share a relevant use case. If they worry about delivery, explain the process and accountability. If their budget is limited, discuss an appropriate scope.

Leave discounts and commitments to the right person

Pricing exceptions, added benefits, contract terms and delivery commitments should be confirmed by a salesperson or manager. AI can summarize intent and suggest next steps without crossing company boundaries.

Offer a next step, not pressure

For example: “I will send the relevant example and delivery outline. Once you have seen them, we can decide whether a short call would help.”
